Super yachts will shortly be given new berths in the "West Marina" of the grandiose Dubai Marina project under construction. In a city which is registering the world's biggest territorial and urban development plan with thousands of cranes and vehicles transporting building material every day, it couldn't have been otherwise. The partially operative marina is situated in a totally new area of the city where artificial canals and coves have been made to pass in between skyscrapers and luxury resorts. The Dubai Marina project foresees as many as five pleasure yachting docking areas for a total of 490 berths. 120 are already complete and usable at the "East Marina stage One" site, a further 60 will be ready as of December in a section dubbed "stage two," 135 will be made available at the "Yacht Club Marina" which shall be completed by the summer of 2007, 60 more are under completion at the "Marina Mall" and yet another 115 berths just for Super Yachts at the said "West Marina," also due to be finished by summer 2007. We were able to personally see that work is well underway at this site, particularly as far as the area ashore is concerned which includes a club house externally designed by Holford's architect studio whilst Hirsch Bdner & Associates are the designers of the modern and functional interiors. Two restaurants, a terrace overlooking the marina and a shopping centre will complete the buildings ashore with a sailing school, ship chandlers and offices for insurance brokers, charter companies and the like. In short, the buildings will host all those commercial activities bound to interest yachtsmen, sea goers and lovers as well as the marina's own offices. Large floating pontoons maximize accessibility and comfortable use by both motor yachts and sailing vessels up to 30 metres. Each berth will have its own water and electricity supply with services that extend to the procurement of ice, on board cleaning, daily weather and nautical forecasts, an electrically powered shuttle service between the pontoons and the club house as well as a sea going taxi service.
The clients of the West Marina will have free access to the Motor Yacht Club, housed therein, which hosts a library, a lounge, a meeting room, a party hall, a billiard room with an adjacent smokers' room, a briefing room where information on weather and fishing conditions may be found, restaurants and night clubs for members . There's also a beech within easy reach. The club publishes newsletters for its members giving general information with specific articles on seafaring activities.
Berths are not on sale and may only be rented for periods of six months at a time. Conditions ashore are welcoming thanks to dedicated entertainment areas and amenities. In the Dubai Marina's shops in fact one can purchase anything from a lifejacket to a Super yacht. There are Shipyards with travel lifts which supply maintenance and laying up facilities as well as specialised workshops. As a whole the Marina is very attractive, specially for those who wish to get to know the region better both from the sea or via land. In a couple of years time the numerous incredible artificial islands, such as "the Palms" and "the World," that are being built will be completed and encompassed into the panorama of Dubai's coastal waters.

The Dubai sex pair, aka Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer, count themselves victorious. This week (Tuesday 25th November) a Dubai appeal court heard that their three-month jail sentence for engaging in sexual acts on a beach had been suspended and that they will be deported. They will arrive home this week. Their lawyer, Hassan Mattar, praised the justness of United Arab Emirates law.
I’m sure that when they get back they will give an exclusive interview to a paper alleging that they were mishandled whilst in Dubai and that the charges should never have been brought. In fact they claim that they were just canoodling and not, in fact, having sex, although they do admit that they were both drunk at the time, also an offence in Dubai, which is a Muslim state.
I have little sympathy for them – whether or not they were getting jiggy, or in the pre-stages of getting jiggy – for two reasons. Firstly, if they had engaged in crude sexual behaviour here on a beach they would also have been charged – probably with the catch-all, “outraging public decencyâ€, which, incidentally, can carry a jail sentence of up to two years, far longer than the sentence that a Dubai court imposed on them originally. But the second reason is far, far more serious.
