Want a real treat during your Costa Rica travel? Take the train to the Pacific beach!

Once upon a time, trains crossed Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Caribbean. There was even a famous “jungle train” from San Jose to Puerto Limon on the Caribbean that some travelers still believe to be in operation. Alas, it’s long gone.

But. . . just a few years ago, a passenger route was reopened from San Jose to Mata de Limon in Caldera, just south of Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast. During the high tourist season, the train runs every weekend and more sporadically during off season.

If you want a really fun weekend, plan to take this 73 mile, four hour ride.

Don’t expect a gentle ride but be sure to take your camera for an authentic, and sometimes spectacular, ride. You’ll cross rivers and canyons on high bridges and pass through rural areas of the country that you’re not likely to see by car---and certainly not by bus.

You’re not going to be alone. The train (some of the cars are 80 years old!) will be alive with Tico families and music.

Along the way, there’ll be brief stops at a number of small towns where townspeople will come aboard to sell “gallos” (tortillas), play guitars and harmonicas and invite passengers to dance.

Almost all of Costa Rica's groundwater sources are safe and drinkable, but in some remote areas bottled water is recommended. These areas will have a reputation based on travelers' past experiences, so ask the locals. When in doubt, however, always go for the bottle!

Top 4 Places to visit in Costa Rica

Tabacon Hot Springs

Tabacon Hot Springs in Costa Rica is home to biological geothermal springs, the reason why this place is one of the top places to consider when visiting Costa Rica. Why? The water from the Tabacon River is heated by the Arenal Volcano then flows to the physical pools of the Tabacon Hot Springs. Unusual plants are present in the vicinity adding up to the unadulterated charm atmosphere. Near the entrance of the river is a heated waterfall where you can sit and enjoy the soothing sensation as the water touches your body.

Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano is considered as the youngest and smallest, yet the most active volcano in Costa Rica since its last eruption on July 29, 1968 where it killed a total of 78 people. This cone-shaped volcano is one of the top tourist destinations in Costa Rica. There are places to stay like lodging houses that offers a panoramic view of the Arenal Volcano. The lodgings wherein you can have a view of the Arenal Volcano are the ones who are most easily rented out. While there are those lodgings that are nearer the volcano, there are also accommodations a little bit far from the crater of the volcano for those who worry of being very near an active volcano. This place is worth visiting and there is no need to worry of eruptions because volcanologists responsible for the area are continuously monitoring the activity of the volcano.

Nicoya Peninsula

Famous for its white sand beaches, nearly all tourists have the Nicoya Peninsula on the top list of the places to visit in Costa Rica. A four-wheel drive is necessary to pass through the complex dirt roads but this is never a problem to deal with for surfers and scuba divers who are very eager to explore the Nicoya Peninsula. If you want to travel around the whole of the Nicoya Peninsula in a laid back manner it might take you two or weeks.

new latest country malaysia

Ever since I arrived back in Malaysia earlier this year, I have been carless. And as with every other Klang Valley denizen short of private transport, I have had to rely on a series of trains, buses, cabs and my own two feet to reach my job and various other appointments and engagements around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. For the most part, I am impressed with the system. It is easy to use, relatively cheap and available at all hours. I can offer no complaints about the LRT system, including the series of feeder buses that work from each station to deliver you to your final destination. Both systems are clean, comfortable and frequent.

Taxis however, bring me some mixed emotions. To use a taxi is an uncertainty. Unlike the train and bus service, which is as predictable as math, taking a taxi in KL can be a varied experience. A perfect ride might be defined as a readily available taxi with a clean interior, a properly functioning metre, and a friendly and knowledgeable well-kept driver whose priority is travelling the quickest, most efficient route available. On the other hand - and their always is an other hand - there is the filthy cab that takes ages to show, with a 'fixed metre' and a rude, arrogant, unhygienic driver who knows exactly how to make the journey long, slow and highly profitable.

But like life, a taxi ride in Kuala Lumpur is usually something in between. And I've taken enough cabs in Malaysia to experience just about everything short of being robbed at knife point.

the arab amazing country egypt

Occupying the northeast corner of the African continent, Egypt is
bisected by the highly fertile Nile valley, where most economic activity takes place. In the last 30 years, the government has reformed the highly centralized economy it inherited from President Gamel Abdel NASSER.

In 2005, Prime Minister Ahmed NAZIF's government reduced personal and corporate tax rates, reduced energy subsidies, and privatized several enterprises. The stock market boomed, and GDP grew about 5% per year in 2005-06, and topped 7% in 2007. Despite these achievements, the government has failed to raise living standards for the average Egyptian, and has had to continue providing subsidies for basic necessities.

The subsidies have contributed to a sizeable budget deficit - roughly 7.5% of GDP in 2007 - and represent a significant drain on the economy. Foreign direct investment has increased significantly in the past two years, but the NAZIF government will need to continue its aggressive pursuit of reforms in order to sustain the spike in investment and growth and begin to improve economic conditions for the broader population. Egypt's export sectors - particularly natural gas - have bright prospects.

world famous dubai

dubai marina

Super yachts will shortly be given new berths in the "West Marina" of the grandiose Dubai Marina project under construction. In a city which is registering the world's biggest territorial and urban development plan with thousands of cranes and vehicles transporting building material every day, it couldn't have been otherwise. The partially operative marina is situated in a totally new area of the city where artificial canals and coves have been made to pass in between skyscrapers and luxury resorts. The Dubai Marina project foresees as many as five pleasure yachting docking areas for a total of 490 berths. 120 are already complete and usable at the "East Marina stage One" site, a further 60 will be ready as of December in a section dubbed "stage two," 135 will be made available at the "Yacht Club Marina" which shall be completed by the summer of 2007, 60 more are under completion at the "Marina Mall" and yet another 115 berths just for Super Yachts at the said "West Marina," also due to be finished by summer 2007. We were able to personally see that work is well underway at this site, particularly as far as the area ashore is concerned which includes a club house externally designed by Holford's architect studio whilst Hirsch Bdner & Associates are the designers of the modern and functional interiors. Two restaurants, a terrace overlooking the marina and a shopping centre will complete the buildings ashore with a sailing school, ship chandlers and offices for insurance brokers, charter companies and the like. In short, the buildings will host all those commercial activities bound to interest yachtsmen, sea goers and lovers as well as the marina's own offices. Large floating pontoons maximize accessibility and comfortable use by both motor yachts and sailing vessels up to 30 metres. Each berth will have its own water and electricity supply with services that extend to the procurement of ice, on board cleaning, daily weather and nautical forecasts, an electrically powered shuttle service between the pontoons and the club house as well as a sea going taxi service.

The clients of the West Marina will have free access to the Motor Yacht Club, housed therein, which hosts a library, a lounge, a meeting room, a party hall, a billiard room with an adjacent smokers' room, a briefing room where information on weather and fishing conditions may be found, restaurants and night clubs for members . There's also a beech within easy reach. The club publishes newsletters for its members giving general information with specific articles on seafaring activities.

Berths are not on sale and may only be rented for periods of six months at a time. Conditions ashore are welcoming thanks to dedicated entertainment areas and amenities. In the Dubai Marina's shops in fact one can purchase anything from a lifejacket to a Super yacht. There are Shipyards with travel lifts which supply maintenance and laying up facilities as well as specialised workshops. As a whole the Marina is very attractive, specially for those who wish to get to know the region better both from the sea or via land. In a couple of years time the numerous incredible artificial islands, such as "the Palms" and "the World," that are being built will be completed and encompassed into the panorama of Dubai's coastal waters.

The Dubai sex pair, aka Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer, count themselves victorious. This week (Tuesday 25th November) a Dubai appeal court heard that their three-month jail sentence for engaging in sexual acts on a beach had been suspended and that they will be deported. They will arrive home this week. Their lawyer, Hassan Mattar, praised the justness of United Arab Emirates law.

I’m sure that when they get back they will give an exclusive interview to a paper alleging that they were mishandled whilst in Dubai and that the charges should never have been brought. In fact they claim that they were just canoodling and not, in fact, having sex, although they do admit that they were both drunk at the time, also an offence in Dubai, which is a Muslim state.

I have little sympathy for them – whether or not they were getting jiggy, or in the pre-stages of getting jiggy – for two reasons. Firstly, if they had engaged in crude sexual behaviour here on a beach they would also have been charged – probably with the catch-all, “outraging public decency”, which, incidentally, can carry a jail sentence of up to two years, far longer than the sentence that a Dubai court imposed on them originally. But the second reason is far, far more serious.
