world amazing place geneva switzerland

For all the international political agencies headquartered here, I’ve found Geneva to be least affected by politics than most cities around the world. Perhaps its history as a politically and socially tolerant culture has something to do with this; or, despite what we see across the political landscape on a global scale, Genevans understand that internationalism is not a political fad, but the means to satisfy compromise and promote understanding among the world’s many disparate nationalities. Fully a third of Geneva’s population is not Swiss-born, but of foreign origin who have moved here to work for all those international-government and non-government agencies headquartered in modern skyscrapers and historic buildings. Therefore, Geneva has a global feel about town that you’ll find in its array of shopping, choice of restaurants, and bountiful arts scene.

As you walk through its city center, set on the crescent-shaped banks of Lake Geneva, you experience Geneva’s French Baroque architecture in the massive apartment buildings along wide boulevards. I’ve not seen so many balconies along a single street. And this scene is replicated street after street. The buildings rise into the sky and hold you within their elegance. Only when you near the delta of all these streets, at the opening to the lake’s vast breathe across to the rising Alps, will you stop looking up.

One afternoon I stood inside L’Usine on Place des Voluntaires. This converted factory now has a cinema, theater, concert space, and art gallery. The atmosphere moves like a wandering mist in a vibrant wood. The generations mingle together in this multi-story space where art is king. I walked through the gallery and was not surprised to see art influenced by the many converging cultures in Geneva.

Switzerland is in Sweden – right?

Last week I wondered if people knew where Sweden was as they so often think that I’m talking about Switzerland when I say that I happen to live in Sweden.

I wonder if the opposite is true? That there are lots of Swiss out there who get asked if they live in Sweden! Now – what kind of conversations do they have, I wonder…

So, close your eyes and … (no – hang on! If you close your eyes, you won’t be able to read this) … OK: just imagine that I have a twin sister (who is not nearly as witty, intelligent, good-looking or modest as I am). Let’s call her Lady Di. She lives in Switzerland.

And you all know where that is, right?

continents_map_sm4

So, Lady Di gets into a taxi and asks to be taken to the airport. Ron Turning happens to be the taxi driver again.

world top city new york subway

Visitors to New York City oftentimes feel overwhelmed by the subway system. However, the subway is the fastest way to get around New York to see the city’s top landmarks and attractions. And despite what you may see in the movies, the subway is not always full of criminals and grime.

Obviously you should take general safety precautions when traveling on the subway. Travel with another person, particularly at night. Ride in the first car where the train operator sits or in the middle car where the train conductor sits, if possible. Keep your bags close to you and don’t wear a lot of flashy jewelry.

Subway fare is $2 per ride. You can buy SingleRide tickets from the large MetroCard vending machines located in every subway station, at station attendant booths, and at local merchant locations. SingleRide tickets need to be used with two hours of purchase.

You can also buy a new MetroCard or add money to your MetroCard in amounts of $4 to $80 from the large or small MetroCard vending machines. Or if you prefer, you can buy a 7-day or 30-day Unlimited Ride MetroCard. If you are staying in New York for more than a few days, the unlimited cards are the best alternative.

The most important thing about traveling by subway is to plan your route in advance. By visiting , you hopstop.com starting and destination addresses and get detailed information about which subway you will need to take.

If you get lost or take the wrong subway, don’t freak out. The conductor on the train or station attendant at the stop will be able to advise you on how to get back to where you need to go.

To learn more about the New York subway system or see a subway map, visit mta.info.

the best new york city

I'm about to head to L.A. for the remainder of the holiday season, so for anyone else planning on wearing shorts to Christmas dinner, take a look at Fred Flare's compilation of December 2006 window displays in New York City. A jolly reminder of love, joy, and shameless money-spending. Cheers!

world famous and amazing dubai

The same company that brought us The Palm Islands, Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp), have done it again expanding their portfolio of man-made islands with this latest Dubai island project shaped like the continents of the world. The World will consist of between 250 to 300 smaller private artifical islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development is to cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport.

Construction has begun on the $US 1.8 billion project which is set to be completed by the end of 2005. It will be located 4 kilometers off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the The Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Each island will be sold to selected private developers and are expected to have pricing beginning at Dhs. 25 million (US$ 6.85 million).

the glasgow city

Urban Expression Glasgow is a church-planting initiative in Scotland's largest city, with a vision to explore new patterns of church life that can be owned by the people of Glasgow's most deprived communities. It is a mission agency devoted to stimulating and nurturing new churches in these areas. Urban Expression Glasgow is committed to working in partnership with others and is keen to listen and learn from others. Urban Expression takes great care not to drain other local churches of their limited resources, but rather our aim is to encourage and support whenever possible.

Steering Group

A Steering Group maintains the values and vision of UE Glasgow. The group currently consists of leaders who also have connections with the Church of Scotland, the International Christian College and the Baptist Union of Scotland (for details of the steering group you can click on the "Who are we?" link below). The Steering Group is actively seeking to build relationships with Christian groups and churches interested in partnering with UE in urban mission. It is also dedicated to recruiting team leaders and team members, and to deploy these strategically in under-churched locations in the most deprived areas of Glasgow.

Urban Expression is a values-based agency with an evangelical-charismatic centre of gravity.

Support - Partner Churches

We are building a network of partner churches in the city. These churches form links with our church planting teams, offer prayer support, learn about urban mission and are communities from which future team members or team leaders might come. The connections are very relational - its about a sense of shared journey and mutual support.
